Aftercare.
One of the most important parts of your new tattoo is aftercare, something that is easily forgotten or not given the respect it deserves. Following these simple steps will ensure that your new ink stays in tip-top condition.
- Leave your tattoo wrapped in its protective covering for a minimum of 2 hours
- Once you have removed your protective covering, it is important to make sure you remove all ointments and ink debris from the tattoo itself as well as the surrounding area with a non fragrance soap. It is easiest to do this in the shower
- After you have cleaned your tattoo, ensure that you dry it thoroughly using a patting or dabbing motion. It is important to take care not to rub the tattoo as this may irritate the area and also cause some discomfort
- Now with clean dry hands apply your chosen ointment, there are many available on the market. At Infamous Ink we will offer Tattoo Goo (subject to availability).
- The following 10-14 days will be your maintenance period. During this time we recommend that you follow these steps 4 times a day to ensure the correct healing of your tattoo. Clean and dry the area and apply your desired ointment 4 times a day remembering to only use a thin smear which should make the area look shiny.
As with all things we also have a list of DO NOT'S to keep in mind:
- DO NOT go swimming or bathe in this time as it will greatly increase your chances of damaging or infection your tattoo
- We understand that some people have to take a bath, in this case, we recommend keeping the tattoo area elevated out of the water
- DO NOT pick or scratch at your tattoo as this will also increase the chances of infection as well as removing ink from the area, itching is expected as your skin is healing, but also any hair removed from the area will be growing back
- DO NOT re-apply any dressings as your skin will need to breath in order to correctly heal
- DO NOT use heavy antiseptics such as Savlon due to its aggressive nature. Rather than healing your tattoo correctly, Savlon it will actually try to pull any foreign bodies from the wound (in this case ink). We also suggest NOT using Vaseline as this will create a barrier and not allow for proper healing
- DO NOT expose your tattoo to direct sunlight during the healing process, after your tattoo is healed we recommend using a high factor (SPF 35+) sun block to protect it.
